McDonald’s stressed that the recent system issues were not due to a cyber attack. Stores in the UK and Australia have reopened after experiencing system freezes.

Similarly, stores in Japan are reportedly also resuming operations after being temporarily closed. The company’s chief information officer, Brian Rice, stated that the global technology system outage was quickly identified and resolved.

He explained that the problem was not directly caused by a cybersecurity event, but rather by a third-party provider during a configuration change. Despite the disruption, many countries are now operating normally, and efforts are underway to bring the rest back online urgently.

Sarah McLean, a franchise owner with 21 branches across the Midlands, reported that all of her locations were affected, leading to an inability to serve customers during that time. Downdetector noted a surge in issues with the McDonald’s UK app, and some social media users expressed their dissatisfaction.

In Japan, stores faced a system failure, but by 14:15 GMT, McDonald’s Australia announced that all of its restaurants had reopened and thanked customers for their patience and support. The fast food chain has approximately 40,000 restaurants globally, including around 1,450 in the UK and Ireland, over 14,000 in the United States, nearly 3,000 in Japan, and about 1,000 in Australia.
