Microsoft released a new optional preview update for Windows 11 this week that introduces a new feature. The changes included in this update are set to roll out to all Windows 11 devices as part of the May 2024 cumulative security update. The testing and rollout of the update occurred at a record pace, initially limited to Windows 11 users in the United States.
There was initial uncertainty about the feature’s stability, with hints that it could be pulled before becoming available in stable versions of Windows 11. However, a slightly modified version of the feature has now landed in the optional update for Windows 11 Stable. Notably, advertised apps now have a “promoted” label to distinguish them from user-installed apps.
For example, the screenshot shows a promotion for the Opera Browser with the promoted label and a description, “browse safely.” It is unclear who is responsible for adding descriptions to the app listings, whether it’s the company that owns the product or Microsoft. Aside from this change, there are no apparent alterations to the functionality.
In addition, the Recommended section of the Start menu will display some Microsoft Store apps from a small set of curated developers, aimed at helping users discover great available apps. Users now have the option to disable the feature in the Windows 11 Start menu.
