Microsoft released a new optional preview update for Windows 11 this week, highlighting an upcoming feature that will be included in the May 2024 cumulative security update for all Windows 11 devices. The testing and rollout of this feature were conducted at a record pace, initially limited to users in the United States.

There were hints that the change might be pulled before being implemented in stable versions of Windows 11. A slightly modified version of the feature has now been included in the optional update for Windows 11 Stable.

The update introduces a “promoted” label for advertised apps, aimed at differentiating them from user-installed apps. A screenshot displays a promotional feature for the Opera Browser, along with a “browse safely” description.

It is unclear whether these descriptions are added by the product’s company or by Microsoft. Aside from this new feature, little else appears to have changed.

The Recommended section of the Start menu will display certain Microsoft Store apps, originating from a select group of curated developers. This aims to assist users in discovering high-quality apps available in the Microsoft Store.

Furthermore, disabling this feature in the Windows 11 Start menu is an option for users to consider.
