Microsoft released a new optional preview update for Windows 11 this week, introducing features that will be included in the May 2024 cumulative security update for all Windows 11 devices. The testing and rollout of these changes occurred at a record pace and were initially limited to users in the United States. There was speculation that the change might be pulled before landing in stable versions of Windows 11. A modified version of the feature has now been included in the optional update for Windows 11 stable.
Promoted apps now feature a “promoted” label to distinguish them from user-installed apps. For example, the Opera Browser is shown with the promoted label and the description “browse safely.” It is unclear whether the company that owns the product or Microsoft adds these descriptions. Aside from this, there seem to be no other significant changes.
The Recommended section of the Start menu will display some Microsoft Store apps from a curated selection of developers, allowing users to discover new applications. This feature can be disabled in the Windows 11 Start menu. It’s worth noting that the text should be rewritten in English.
